Get a team and make your plans for next year - it was an REALLY fun event!
23 straight hours of skiing - noon Saturday to noon Sunday
Prizes (including lots of gift certs to Kittery Trading Post, even a couple pairs of skis)
Multiple Free meals (Pasta Dinner, Portland Pie late night, pancake breakfast)
Multiple Live bands - outside during the day, inside the Loose Boots at night
Zumba lessons - to loosen you up Sunday morning
A mechanical bull - for the brave or foolhardy
Here are the results: http://allsportsevents.com/Results/winter_results/WinterKidsDownhil...
The winning team averaged just over 5 runs per hour for 23 hours straight!
Most teams did 1-2 hour shifts.
(it got very competitive between a couple Portland law firms who bet the night's bar bill on which one would finish higher).
When you weren't doing runs for the team, you could still ski anytime and during normal hours cut right to the front of the line, which made for some nice first tracks this AM and lots of people enjoying sunrise on the hill.
Some guy even skinned up the hill 22 times during the derby!
BONUS - we raised over $40K for Winterkids!

Yep, t'was a great event. My legs, back, and brain is DEAD. Long cold night. MB, Zenny and I each skied way too many runs yesterday.
Great event for sure. I am pretty darn tired. Not sure we have ever skied that fast, in race tuck at that hour...Mt Abrams has some cool terrrain especially in the middle of the night.

Permalink Reply by Glade Monkey on March 11, 2013 at 8:01am There was only one route down lit up overnight: Sweeper to Boris...over and over and over and over...
Although I did see one guy duck into Upper Fractured Fairy Tales next to the T-bar.
The chair ride up was mostly dark too. You'd jump on, call out to the partiers in the ice cave, then check out the stars and wait for that one annoying light to hit you right in the eyes just above the cliff.
We had a pretty large team (8 skiers), so none of us did more than 4 hrs. I led off and did the first two hours starting at noon which were fun - we had a 'gentleman's agreement' among the teams to all wait at the top and start together. For lack of a better term it was the closest to a Chinese Downhill that I've ever been in. Twenty or so people, racing all out.
During the day, the fastest route down was taking a right off the lift and then a right onto Frostbite Falls. But, I took several other routes to get to lower Boris, mostly to keep it fresh.
Even with the detours, we were in the top grouping, with 10 laps after 2 hrs.
My other shift was from right after the 10pm groom until midnight, we had dropped down to the 2nd tier by then but it was still FUN to do those late night laps. Our hosts have a camp nearby that we could walk to and get some sleep.

If you were skiing 10 pm on...KC and I were there. We had 2nd chair up and pretty much raced those next 5 runs all out. Team from Portland Pie was only team ahead of us (guy in blue, then guy in orange) to start but we passed them at breakneck speed after a few runs...think PP folks figured it it was getting a bit dangerous at the speeds we were all carrying....they switched out after a few runs but KC and I kept rolling...we skied 3 hour stretch from 10-1 non-stop and pretty much as fast as we could (while still staying in control)....

Permalink Reply by Glade Monkey on March 11, 2013 at 10:52am Our team was on the last chair after the groom hold. I rode up with a teenage girl switching in for "More Rope Tows, Less Lattes" who were leading overall at the time. I am sure that I passed at least 5 people and almost completely made up a lap her before finishing up. In her defense, she had been playing BBall most of the season and hadn't been boarding much.
I did get absolutely SMOKED by at least one person pointing 'em straight down Boris....might have been you. That was my cue to call in for a replacement.
KC - I was wearing a green jacket...
I'll have to find you guys sometime at SR... Maybe I'll go upstairs in Barker and get a beer or two to loosen up the legs for afternoon runs.
short guy and tall guy you couldnt miss us....KC (Black & Green), MB (Blue & tan)....we are around all the time in Barker....come find us....great event, nice job GM

Permalink Reply by Zen Master on March 11, 2013 at 11:31am Oh Man! Are you angling to outdo Lindsey Vonn? That totally is a bummer, and I hope you do not have nearly the feared damage. Little Scotty is going to miss his guide!

It was a blast, right up until about 9 pm when I crashed and messed up my knee and had to abandon my teammates KC and MB. ACL is definitely torn, won't know about MCL until MRi tomorrow bummin
