US Women's Soccer - better than bikes and a fake baseball game

The chatter on here lately misses the boat on what is a better happening in sports.

US Woman's Soccer on the verge of a World Cup Championship game - this out duels a bunch of bloold doping cheats and an exhibition baseball game that has become a joke, yet decides how a world championship may play out.

It's been pretty good stuff.  I'm not taking the bait on the baseball or biking comment, but the women's game has come a long, long way since the US Women won in 1999.  I'm a big soccer fan, played in college (Go White Mules, and still play.  People like to draw the comparison b/t men and women's basketball.  If you've been watching the closer parallel is NBA and college hoops.  Should be a good game on Sunday, although I would have liked to see the US face Sweden, since Sweden really rubbed the US' face in the group loss.

One other point...definately wouldn't want to meet 5' 11" Abby Wambach in dark alley.

I did not play in college, although wish I had tried to walk on. White Mules? Colby? Mark Serdjenian, men's Colby coach was a teacher in Waterville - Brookside, now GM Elemtary. Many moons ago. WHS girls were a state powerhouse in the early 80's
Serje was the man during my time up there.  Good program...NESCAC is still pretty pure sports.

I once had a girlfriend that played soccer at Bates.  She was an all american.  I watched a bunch of soccer with her, mens and womens. I have only played the sport in a pick up game friendly capacity.  I have to say that I can not see the excitement in that sport.  It is such a controled sport with no contact and the action only comes in small spurts.  More like a chess game on a large field.

Just my opinion.  I realize that lots of people enjoy the hell out of it.  I am sure it is fun to play but I can not watch it anymore.  But if an american team is winning anything, I say Good for them!

I'll jump on the bandwagon for a World Cup championship game, but find it tough to watch an entire soccer match unless my kids or someone else that I know is playing...

I won't bash other sports, y'all can watch what you want. I just hope they get this NFL thing sorted out because I am ready for some American Football!

Congrats to US Women's NT - way to dig it out and get into the finals!  Wishing them good fortune on Sunday.

I played football at Colby during the same era, and always had a lot of respect for Coach Serj (he was also a dean at the time and I dealt with him in that capacity as well).  He's still the head soccer coach, going on 36 years.  Oh and by the way, these days they are just the Colby Mules (the "White" has been dropped).

As for watching soccer, I am in pretty much the same camp as Hawk and Glade Monkey...not knocking it, but I can only watch in small doses.  That said, kudos to the US women for getting to the final and I'll be rooting for them to get 'er done in the championship game on Sunday.

I enjoy soccer, even going so far as watching some of the Copa America games in Spanish.  Having coached soccer for 25 years at the high school level, I understand many nuances of the game that the average person might not know, hence making the game more interesting.  The best thing about soccer is that the game moves along without commercials.  Baseball has become nearly unwatchable for me, and I played it through high school.  Even football is heading the same way.  Thank god for the DVR.
Old timer, I feel the same was about baseball as you do about soccer...well said.  I can watch any baseball game from 6 yr olds to majors and never get bored....I love every "nuance" of the game.  I like soccer, just never really played and just a casual fan but very happy for the US women.  And I think Hope Solo is a babe!

Big surprise you would boil it down to this.  A couple of google searches and you're an expert.

And there it is.
Yep, that internet is an amazing thing, I think it has a chance to sticking around.  Far from an expert on soccer, but the girl thing I have figured out a bit.
