Hey Sunday River, ning, whoever...

Please create some category/topics for various discussions.  Having just a general discussion bucket stinks.  Too many members use a thread as instant messaging, putting that thread at the top and suppressing worthwhile threads.  If you can have a classified category, why not one for sports, one for politics, one for skiing along with the general one.  That way, you may get more community members involved.  Now, this board is dominated by 20 or so members who have no problem in sending a thread off track. It would be nice to get more of the community involved. I only check in here sporadically because there is not much Sunday River “skiing” discussion going on – if there is – it is buried way down. Categories would make this a better board.  There must be a way.

Beautiful, this is just what I was looking for. Thanks!
Is WatervilleMESkier actually Rippy? The whole: "Jr said"....is very Rippy-esque.
There was talk of categories when this was set up. Some good points....

The points about how we act as a solid community really stated to be evident in 2004 with one of the first real get togethers.

Ski talk will be in the air soon. The board has very few parementers and minimal moderation. that was the request of the membership and that is what has taken place.

Some good again, some not exactly perfect. The Loaf, Jay peak and here are the only ones who are resort funded and have direct mangement repesented boards in the East, may be more, but that is what comes to mind.

The platform was chosen partly due to it has the same set up as the Loaf basically.

The old site could not handle pictures or logging in even. Over 25 members had active input before this went live, some I inivted, the rest were either inivted though the friends network or were given a personal invite at a meet and greet that mangement atteneded.

So maybe some change is possible some may be warranted. The communciation will not change nor should it. We are a community, not just a discussion board. There are plenty of other outlets if a message board only is what one is lookign for.

The Charity funtion of this board. We started with food drives.

We have a few members who are connected to Maine handi Cap skiing. Theses people give their, time, money or support in many ways.

We also have folks who get direct support from this group and take advantage of the sevice and caring. It has taken off.

Not a bad adaptation and evolution of the board. Again that is not going ot change.
IM nature of the forum is a nature of the beast .... it is an extension of the "live" version of community that takes place every weekend (and daily to some extent) during ski season and is growing in the off season. Even further solidified with the widespread use of internet connected "snartphones", which facilitate immediate updates via thread subscriptions and responses without the need to be planted in front of a computer. Navigation is a bit more cumbersome with the devices, which also adds to "saying what you gotta say here rather than there".

Given the dynamics, more categories are unlikely to change the "thread drift" issue WVMES is concerned with.
IMHO Thread drift can be more manageable with at more "threaded" view, Where a thread can spread/blossom and the reader can decide how to follow it. It can also help if the viewer provides a filter mechanism for the the reader so that responses to the thread of interest can be below the reader's acceptability threshold and appear as such, and give them the opportunity to still read it only if they so explicitly choose.

A threaded view of the conversation would be very beneficial not to mention the ability to see more conversations/threads in one screen.
