Hey Sunday River, ning, whoever...

Please create some category/topics for various discussions.  Having just a general discussion bucket stinks.  Too many members use a thread as instant messaging, putting that thread at the top and suppressing worthwhile threads.  If you can have a classified category, why not one for sports, one for politics, one for skiing along with the general one.  That way, you may get more community members involved.  Now, this board is dominated by 20 or so members who have no problem in sending a thread off track. It would be nice to get more of the community involved. I only check in here sporadically because there is not much Sunday River “skiing” discussion going on – if there is – it is buried way down. Categories would make this a better board.  There must be a way.

Agreed.....this would be a huge improvement.
Good idea. I have to think there isn't much skiing talk because its summer. And given the familiarity many of the board members have with each other, the hickjacking and pm like messages will happen like on every other board. SL board, Alpine Zone, Busted Spoke....all the same. Most posts from same people and each of those boards has "categories". I am a casual reader of the SL board and I watched the regulars over there work a new poster right off the board with their intimidation and personal posts. But I do like the idea, but don't think it would yeild anything different.
I knew you would be one of the 1st to chipe in and I guessed correctly (to myself) on your response. I think you are flat out wrong - those sites don't generate the instant messaging that takes place here. Skiing discussions are just ramping up on most boards. Saying the discussions here are similar to SL, AZ, Nelsap etc is off. Quite frankly, it doesn't have to be exactly like other boards - keep what you have - but categorize it so all the BS instant message threads stay in General Discussion. I'm glad you like the idea.

MB is correct, IMO. Every message board has its core group of regulars, some bigger than others but the premise is pretty much the same...and the regulars follow the categories when categories are part if the infrastructure. Not saying categories wouldn't be a good thing for everyone, and if more get involved that of course would be a good thing, but based on my experience and observations it probably would not change overall utilization significantly.

WatervilleSkier, I just looked back at your previous posts and there seems to be an undercurrent of confrontation to many of them. Based on that I feel compelled to ask, and this is an honest question not a jab, are you just here to stir things up or do you have a genuine interest in the SR community? Or is it personal with MB for some reason? Just trying to understand your point of view...
Good for you WS, why don't you "pat yourself on the back". As many have said, you have the right to change the channel if you don't like I what you see.

I know all this community stuff gets tired, 50 people playing survivor, 30 riding together in Dempsey, countless others getting together for beer thirty, parties, bbqs, etc during winter and over the summer....you are right no real community here. Oh and the skiing related threads will be picking up....right about time Red Sox thread slows down.

I like I said good idea but my prediction is it won't change anything.
You going to the game today?

Nope, you? Still in Maine.
Yeah, leaving in an hour. Feel like I spent the last week there. 5 games in 6 days. I'm 4-1.

Zen Master - I ski almost exclusively in Maine - SR early in the season when its the only game. I like some of the discussions in here - obviously it is full of people who enjoy skiing in Maine - not just Sunday River. I don't think I would ever claim that I am a full fledged member of this community - I do not have the opportunity to take it to the next step with "live" participation. But do I have an interest in SR community? Sure I do. This is really an on-line community, no? As time has gone on, I believe it has turned into an IM board dominated by just a few people. While it is true other boards have core regulars, in a good thread topic on those "other" boards you will see plenty of posters who are not regulars. AND you typically do not have polluters who purposely take a thread off topic. I think if you categorize, the urge to IM would diminish - just my opinion. Ripsaw, you and MonkeyBrook have said it is a good idea and I suspect others feel it is too - so can it be done?

I have nothing personal against MonkeyBrook. I made the "pat yourself on the back" comment when he used charity work as a crutch to a discussion (argument) in another unrelated thread. I then clarified my comment and toned it down, if you will. He is the one who has brought it up again in this thread. I will say again, the charity work in here is all good....

Anyway, you only need to take a look at Junior's comments above... while possibly in jest - we've seen the IM take over this thread topic as well.

Why is me asking Monkeybrook if he's going to the Yankee game a comment made "possibly in jest"? We are both Yankee fans. We both go to a number of games every season in the Bronx. At some of these games, we see eachother and hang out. I was doing nothing more than inquiring if today was gonna be one of those days that MB and I would see eachother at Yankee Stadium. The answer was no because while I was in the Bronx, MB was still in Maine.

What part of that do you perceive to be "in jest" or an "IM" or "taking the thread off topic"? Was there even a topic to begin with?

Also, no reason to knock the charitable work that MB does. He never asks for recognition for his efforts. He's just a good guy with a good heart who does what he does. Your "pat yourself on the back" comments were not really warranted. He's a good guy.

And on related note, thsi community has developed into much more than an online chat room. These folks all hang out together, party together, ski and ride together, go to concerts together, go to sporting events together, do charitable work together, and even travel together. These activities are much more than just "chatting online."

You should join these fine folks who have been brought together by this community, not try to change it. There already are different categories on this board. They're called threads. If you don't like a particular "category", move on the the next one. It's only a click away.

I apologize if anything I said here upset you or took your "category" off topic. You won't hear from me in any more of your categories. Again, sorry if I offended.

"used as a crutch"....too funny. Just for clarification, Rippy and I were going back and forth...it was getting a bit personal and I decided to bow out. I did not mean to imply that the charity work was a crutch....just didnt think we needed to take it any further. I believe I also thanked Rippy for his charity work. Just wasnt worth continuing.

Agree with Jr, if you want to start a thread about something go ahead and do it. The board is free. But if anyone sees as post they can reply, right?

Jr, too bad Yanks counts get a big hit today. Must have been a great day in the Bronx. 45 degrees in Maine this am. 80 when we got back to RI.
