Up for the first time this year. A few comments:
1. Where's the natural snow? Bare ground everywhere without snowmaking. We have more snow in our backyard in SE Mass right now than Oz. OTOH kudos to the snowmakers. Some amazing product out there today. And lots of it. I've never seen so many guns going during the day ever.
2. What's up with Rooster's? The baked haddock that I love is now $16.95, up from $10.95. Most other menu items have similar increases. Since when did Rooster's become upscale? Still a great meal, but is this the right policy in today's economy? I could see going up a buck, maybe even 2, but 6? I don't think so.
3. $12 for beer, pizza and movie ticket weekdays at Suds is still a deal that's hard to beat.
4. What's going on with the ice rink next to the Casablanca? Didn't look well-maintained. No warming hut this year? We liked the setup there last year.
5. College week means no hot tub for us geezers at the Summit. Counted 14 guys in it when I hopped on the exercise bike this afternoon. Half hour later when I quit, not one had left, leaving a number of people lurking around in the pool waiting for room and finally giving up. A sense of the fundamental decencies is not parcelled out equally at birth some writer (Fitzgerald?) once said.

We stopped at Roosters on our way up New Years Eve. All we wanted was a burger, but the whole menu was high-end stuff - prime rib, lobster and the like. I thought it was just for that night.
"Upscale" has become a real dirty word, hasn't it?
And yeah, 2 thumbs up to the snowmakers and groomers. I've been giving them exactly that sign from the chairs when I see them on the mountain. Which is a lot, considering how busy they've been, 24 hours a day since the temperature dropped.

Permalink Reply by thaller1 on January 6, 2011 at 11:28am While I am a daytripper and I don't see the issues at the hotels and the restaurants I have noticed a shift to create a more "upscale" atmosphere all around..starting with the chondola and valet parking. I've also noticed the decline of the educated skier... I'm not sure if it's that we've backed off on educating to concentrate on moving up in society or that we're attracting a new clientele that is more concerned with how they look than how they ski (including safety).... an observation and a concern. I hope this trend changes direction... I miss the way it used to be...

General Rule:
If you're wearing Red Ski Pants: you're a poopyhead-pick-your-nose skier.
Beyond that you're up a creek!

just realized the irony here...coming from the one who posted "important question" and then asked what color jacket I should get this year!! LOL

Permalink Reply by Maineskier69 on January 6, 2011 at 6:30pm 1. In no way shape or form can Sunday River control the amount of natural snow that comes down.
2. FYI: When a fisherman loads his tank with $40,000+ of diesel to run a 3 day trawl to catch that haddock, it does translate into a higher price. (Remember "market" price?)
3. Love suds.
4. FYI: It has been around 40 degrees for the past 4 days, ice doesn't do to well when that happens. Layers help against the cold.
5. There is no rule for the maximum amount of time one can stay in a hot tub. Things like that happen.
Don't mean to sound like a smart ass, but 4/5 of those questions were just answered using common sense.

Permalink Reply by Shelley Bowen on January 9, 2011 at 8:09am I don't know why but "double-brown diamond" CRACKS me up! Luckily we started on (middle) Vortex last night to add to Quantum, Airglow, and Black H***. Winter wonderland in Aurora today.
Answer to item number 1...
The lack of snow is heart wrenching. I think there needs to be a change to my job title. Maybe we're a second half team?

Permalink Reply by thaller1 on January 9, 2011 at 12:42pm Here are my observations from this weekend:
1. SR did a great job trying to recover from the unfortunate melt & freeze. Downdraft, White Heat and 3D in particular were fantastic!
2. I think there might be a need for more communication from operations to reporting? Right Stuff was reported as being the place to be due to the prior days snowmaking, but was closed for racing and Eureka was slated for a late morning opening, but never did.
3. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SR - But asking for your help
at 1:30pm (yes I noted the time) I watched an entire group of Gould skiers bomb across Kansas without even a glimpse up hill to Northern Lights.... 5 riders coming down Northern Lights piled up because they were unable to stop for the 15 or so kids zipping by on Kansas... about halfway through the crowd I saw a trainer who very ineffectively encouraged the racers to mind the intersection..
I hold my tongue about racing etc because I do understand the logistics whether it angers me that trails are closed for racing or not. I hear about racers all the time that don't pay attention and ski too fast etc..but again, I hold my tongue because a few here and there aren't the whole team..but when I see an entire group of them showing absolutely NO regards or safety concerns to the other skiers out there I don't hold my tongue.
This matter effects all of us, SR - because skiers get a bad impression of the mountain, Skiers/Riders- because we are endangered and Gould - because it gives them a bad reputation.
I encourage everyone ...SR, Gould and the Community to do everything we can to educate these skiers and prevent accidents and misconceptions!!
