Just finished 2 weeks on the road with the Freestyle crew. We had comps at both Loon and Sugarloaf.
It was really interesting to see the differences between all 3 resorts. Some observations:
Loon.
Sugarloaf.
I'm sure MB has some to add.
In short, I would encourage the SR team to make a venture out to the other locations. There is good stuff going on out there.
On the flip side, can't wait to get home to SR this weekend. CANT WAIT!

It would be cool to add those magic carpets to the SR triples to speed those suckers up.

Overall, great experiences at both Loon and SL
Loon:
-Love the temporary lodge which I hear they use for concerts, parties and such...we need one of those
-Love the Yurt...we need one of those
-Tons of garbage cans (top and bottom of every lift)
-Choo Choo train, would be fun to have one of these
-Terrain Park by base lodge, very cool...small features great for the little kids
-Loon Freestyle coaches, nice recovery after rocky start.
SL:
-Boy the lifts are a mess, the winds only make them worse
-Misery Whip, we need one of those
-Rude lodge workers clearing out lodge in the middle of the day for a fundraiser, we dont need those
-The Rack, full slab of ribs taken down by MB, Wheeler and Lobstah Land....we need the Rack South
-The Barnstormers, someone please book this band at SR...they were great and even MB dancing to the Dead
- The Wind: SL can have the wind
Overall, love the Boyne resorts....great time over the past few weekends but like Astro happy to return to SR this weekend.
I have been to five Boyne ski area's, they are all totally different.
Overall, I think Sunday River is the best managed and best overall experience. The on MT food at Sunday River is also much better, good variety and quality.
The best skiing is Big Sky, but you can't really compare east to west.
Interesting, the retail stores at both Big Sky and Brighton are embarrassing. I know no one talks about it, but the ski shop is really well staffed and organized here.
Permalink Reply by bob r/vortex on February 2, 2012 at 9:46am I was at Loon for ten years love it there, nice vertical, Loved the governors lodge and Apres set up. Many locals hang there. More here, better terrain, shorter lift lines, better snowmaking, longer season, shuttle service and Slope side lodging. I may ski Loon Monday, nice to have options.
Permalink Reply by Ripsaw on February 2, 2012 at 11:45am Interesting perspective. So, do I understand you to mean that when you say that SR is the best overall experience, that given a choice between spending a week at SR or Big Sky (ignoring the obvious differences in travel costs), you'd pick SR?

Permalink Reply by MonkeyBrook on February 2, 2012 at 12:21pm I have skied Loon, SL, SR, Brighton and Big Sky...no comparison....BS is 1000x better than the other resorts. I have never skied Crystal, so cant add that in. Ski shop not important to me.
Permalink Reply by Ripsaw on February 2, 2012 at 12:37pm Same here and agree with your assessment. The food and the ski shop would have to be absolutely aweful for me to pick any of those other mountains over Big Sky. Someone in here....maybe Hawk gives Crystal high marks and I've heard a lot of good things about it elsewhere too.

Permalink Reply by Hawk on February 2, 2012 at 3:05pm I haven't been to Big Sky yet so I can not compare it to Crystal. Crystal is very cool on many fronts.
Permalink Reply by TOOTH on February 2, 2012 at 8:39pm Big Sky kicks ass. Best of Boyne by far. Nothing else in the ballpark. And thats without Moonlight Basin involved. I just got an email from Big Sky today that they are 100% open. Im thinking about a trip. I love it there. Amongst the best there is anywhere. The shops on mountain do suck bad but you can drive a few mins down the hill and you'll find some great ones. Both ski and snowboard. They had an obscure part for a burton binding that I was shocked to find.
