Hi -

Long time member here, finally ready to become a homeowner in the Sunday River community.   My family and I are currently building a 5br high end ski home right near the mountain.  It will be a mixed use house for us as well as renting to some lucky people who pass my rigorous screening process :)

As we progress there has been a couple of questions that have come up and I would like to have some advice of this community on them.

1. We plan on using a property management company to help rent the place.  Does anyone have any recommendations or complaints about the ones in the area?

2. We need a snow removal company, one that will plow the paved driveway, shovel the walkways and decks.  I know you can pay by the storm, but do any of them in the area do a flat rate for the season?

3.  There does not seem to be much in the way for cable or internet providers.  Is time warner and dish the only option?  I hear that TW kind of sucks.  I plan on working during the week up there so I need a good internet connection.

4. Need a hot tub - any recommendations for a company in the area?

Thanks in advance for your responses, and please let me know if there is anything else I should be thinking about before we move to the area.

I'm pretty sure oxford networks (local phone company) has high speed DSL internet but no idea if it is good or not.

I use TW.. It works pretty well... I have it set up that i only really pay during the ski season.. Usually NOVEMBER-APRIL.. The other months i pay like twenty bucks but if i do go up in the summer i dont have internet and i only get like 5 channels.. Hope that helps

Time Warner's ok.  We had good luck with the internet service last year.  Worked great.  We tried upgrading our condo's service to HD.  They first gave us a box that wasn't HD (we already had regular stuff working with the little converter boxes).  We couldn't get the first box working and then they shipped us a real HD box.  We couldn't get that to sync up either.  I spent way too much time on hold 30 minutes+ waiting for support and then 30+ minutes more several time trying to diagnose it.  I never did get it work and just decided to return it.  The suspected cause was a weak signal at that outlet and they would have had to send someone out to check it.

Even those little DTA converter boxes are pain - they keep getting turned off and you have to call to get them re-activated.

Bandy, congrats to you and your family.

Hers is some info  Pat Henderson (207) 539-6047 for Hot Tubs.  Her Mom Nancy owns Hilltop Pool and Spa in West Paris...Pat has her own place...they work together and have been taking care of us for a long time.  We have a bunch of friends who use Pat and Nancy...great service and very nice people.

For snow, we use Doug Wilson (207) 357-5642.  We pay by storm but he will do by season too....

We have TWC...their connection and speed is great.  We use for cable and internet...not cheap $150 per month but we have the 200+ stations.    We had DISH, they were awful.

We just disconnected phone from Oxford....no need for it....but we were paying $20 per month for local service only.  TWC doesnt offer the phone for some areas of Newry.

You know how to reach me if you have any other ?s....good luck.

Great thanks Chris and everyone else!  This is a huge help.

I have time warner with Seasonal service.  Faster than home.  I like it.  We dropped the land line like others.  You might Consider a sling box for you own use.  It took a while to get mine working right, but more Channels at less cost for your personal use, ie pay channels and  Hd options.

I have found plowing and rentals are better handled by two different companies.

Second DA Wilson, used them 10 seasons or so, never an issue, they clear our walkway too, sure they'd do whatever you need. Same guy plows everytime, or whenever we are there. We pay per storm, snowy winters are double edged sword haha.

TWC here, we pay $50/mo for basic basic cable and Internet, not big into TV and live a few doors down from video store if kids get antsy. channel 7 is most watched :) Also, we've been happy with their customer service when needed.

Just call or visit TWC and tell them you are considering going to DISH and they'll knock up to $80 off your monthly bill. Last time we took in the DVR to trade for a replacement (they flake out after about a year) my monthly bill for cable and 'net went from $169/ to $83/ including all their taxes and fees. It's their "customer retention" unadvertised special.

have used this ploy a few times...3x actually but for 6 months at a time...might be time to do it again.

Yeah...Sling Box (can buy at Sears, Best Buy) is the way to go for HD streaming for TV.

I forgot to add that i also use Doug Wilson for my snow removal... He does my two lots, my deck and the stairs... I pay by the storm..

Ron & TJ Savage charge by the season. Expensive but were good last year which was first year I used them. You might consider a cell phone internet pad if you have good service at the site.

I have never had good luck with local property management companies, but I am not their bread and butter rental type (too cheap), so you may have better service.
